Back To Basics: New Year, New Goals

One of my resolutions this year was to get back to being a student.  I really began to feel this past year that as I plugged away at getting my comics works done I became more about production instead of working hard to grow as an artist.  This was one of the major reasons I made the decision to take a break from my regular updates online from Kevin and the Light of Destiny to get back to work on just working at my growth.

When I was in college I became aware of the painter John Singer Sargent and fell in love with his work.   His work was hugely influential in my development as an artist.  And as a student I also spent a lot of time creating master studies, which is basically a reproduction you make of an artist’s work to learn from them and their processes.  Well, I’ve been a bit out of practice in the traditional painting arena and I’ve had a huge desire to grow as a digital artist.  So I decided to try my hand at a master study of Sargent done completely in Photoshop and stripped down from my normal process of color selection and using presets.  This is all manually choosing colors and dropping them on the canvas, manually blending colors as well. the idea was to treat it like a painting I would have on a canvas and had to mix colors individually.  I’m setting a time deadline of two hours per study, but I hope to do about two a month and try to grow a lot this year.  I think this one came out well.  What do you think?
