As all of you know, I have been diligently working towards a goal of completing a pitch for my book The Unknowns. I finished it last week . Well I got word back yesterday from the agent I had been talking with that she decided to pass on the book. It was a very nice experience all in all and if any of you are seeking representation, I really recommend seeking her out. Her name is Bernadette Baker-Baughman. Very nice lady.
When something you were pushing so hard on doesn’t pan out, it causes you to level set again. I’ve been in a tug-o-war about what to do with project, laregly due to the pitching process as well as potentially hitting comic cons with the book next year. I’m pretty sure what I will be doing next with it, but I am writing this post to talk with all of you about the struggle of making comics and art in general.
It’s hard business. Hard I tell you. I don’t think you need me to remind you just how hard it is. Just the simple creation of the piece of art is hard, then you show it to people. And that’s hard because you have to grow as an artist and you may not be there yet or whatever the case may be. We wrap so much of ourselves up in the art we make. It’s hard to pick yourself up again. But you have to. The best thing you can do for youself is focus on improving, pushing your ability, do the things you can do to make yourself a better craftsman. You CAN NOT and SHOULD NOT be so focused on business or making money (preaching to myself here too) that you put that ahead of your growth in this area. Good work finds a way through. And if you are world class at your talent… well it works itself out.
So lift your head up out there guys. Explore your craft. Push yourself. Focus on what you can control: making the art and improving. Put the work out there. Let people watch you grow. You will eventually start to break down some walls.
Get back to work.
With that said: Who wants to see the first act of my book? 🙂
(Announcement coming soon)
Love your attitude, Michael! And I’d help again in a second. I have faith in you.
Aw dude, thanks Nick! I’m really grateful you’re here helping out and your encouragement.
